3 Hamburger Frauen, Ava, 2017

A signature features of 3 Hamburger Frauen (Ergül Cengiz, *1975 in Moosburg an der Isar, lives and works in Munich / Henrieke Ribbe, *1979 in Hannover, lives and works in Berlin / Kathrin Wolf, *1974 in Ruit, lives and works in Hamburg) is expansive wall paintings which also depict the artists themselves that are often integrated in installations. They resemble role plays that are adapted to the respective exhibition context. The 3 Hamburger Frauen do not have much time to prepare for a show. The meetings are short and intensive. Since they live in different cities, they often bridge the distance by mail. A roll of paper is then sent back and forth for as long as it takes to produce something that satisfies at least the majority of the three.

For The History Show at the Kunstverein, the 3 Hamburger Frauen created a metaphorically charged wall painting that takes up the stations of the Kunstverein and accompanies important phases of its history with collages. For the Kunstverein’s annual edition program, they have developed a series of collages titled Women’s March. The title refers to the protest rally for women’s and human rights that was held a day after President Trump’s inauguration in Washington D.C. Each of the ten collages features a pioneering figure of the historical women’s movement, among others, Helene Lange, Simone de Beauvoir and Ava Gardner.
