The use of different materials, such as plastic, metal, textiles and silicone, not only lends the works of Daiga Grantina (*1985 in Riga, lives and works in Paris) a fascinating, mostly shimmering surface, but also leads to seemingly organic forms that give free rein to the viewer’s associations. The lightness and flexibility of her abstract, transparent sculptures reflect the site and the surrounding architecture. Her show Pillars Sliding Off Coat-ee, presented at the Kunstverein in Hamburg this year, was an example of the field of tension created between material and the underlying stories, which Grantina weaves into her installations, for example, the reference to the chaos-theoretical thoughts of Otto Rössler, who compared dynamic processes with the so-called “taffy puller,” a machine for making candy.

The exclusive annual edition Housekeeping is a prime example of the poetic material associations that characterize Grantina’s art. The artist formulates it as follows:

Housekeeping

the last remains in the bucket

hold moist eyes

a loose play of threads

woven through and through with color
