Various sources such as upotian Fantasy, traditional and modern painting or cover illustrations of Science Fiction classics like Perry Rhodan are the starting point for Dirk Bell’s paintings and drawings. They depict dream-like worlds in which opposing moments as light and shadow, day and night do not exclude each other, the figurative and abstract are symbolically unified.
His edition for the Kunstverein is a two-part work: a drawing on an egg and a butterfly. The seemingly abstract entangled black lines assemble to a bottom at close inspection which harmonically relates to the image carrier. As an ensemble egg, drawing and butterfly form a metaphor on birth, erotic and metamorphosis.
