1817

A small circle of Hamburg’s art collectors meets once a week in the house of David Christopher Mettlerkamp, a lead roofer, at Lange Mühren 37, to discuss graphic prints as well as illustrations. Such a circle, namely the »Verein zur Beförderung des Kunstgeschmacks« (association for the promotion of taste in art) existed already in 1806 within the framework of the »Patriotische Gesellschaft« (patriotic society) in Hamburg. However, in 1817, three years after the French occupation, its activities were put on ice.


1821 / 1822

On the 24th of January in 1822, the »Hamburgische Kunst-Verein« (art association of Hamburg) establishes its first statute. When the growing group of participants becomes too big, the Kunstverein decides to meet in Georg Ernst Harzen’s art dealer shop, at Große Johannisstraße 48. Members are, inter alia, a merchant, a diplomat, two architects, a teacher, a physician, an insurance broker and a lawyer as well as three artists.


1824

Weekly meetings are now taking place at Neuer Wall 131, the home of Harzen’s business partner Johann Matthias Commeter. For the first time, the organisation of an art exhibition is considered.


1826

The 1. Öffentliche Kunstausstellung (first public art exhibition) takes place from the 13th of April until the 18th of May in a house at the corner of ABC-Straße and Neustädter Fuhlentwiete. Displayed are primarily works by young Hamburg artists like Louis Asher, Günther and Jacob Gensler, Victor Emil Janssen, Carl Julius Milde and Christian Morgenstern as well as some paintings from artists outside of Hamburg as e.g. Caspar David Friedrich’s Das Eismeer (1823-1824) and Der Watzmann (1824-1825). This event marks the starting point for a public art exhibition culture in Hamburg.

A »Gemälde-Verloosung-Verein« (painting raffle organisation) is established and affiliated to the art association in Hamburg. Subsequently, art works are raffled yearly (as for example in 1827 when one of Caspar David Friedrich’s Mondscheinlandschaft was drawn as a prize).


1829

The 2. Öffentliche Kunstausstellung (second public art exhibition) is being held in a concert hall of the »Theater am Gänsemarkt«, with works by some of the most important artists of German and Dutch schools. From now on until the »Hamburger Brand« (fire of Hamburg) in 1842 these big sales exhibitions with contemporary art works take place every two to three years.


1836

The Kunstverein starts to develop an internal graphics collection. Rooms over Harzen’s art dealer shop at Neuer Wall are being rented to establish a library and a reading room.


1837

Statutes of the Kunstverein are being altered to highlight its educational task.


1839

On April the 22nd, the foundation of a museum is proposed in an extended executive meeting.

From now on, not only paintings are drawn as prizes at the »Gemälde-Verloosung-Verein« but also spin-off benefits (for example graphic prints and drawings).


1842

The 9. Kunstausstellung (9th art exhibition) consists of works on loan (paintings of old masters from private collections in Hamburg).


1848

The Kunstverein and the »Verloosungsverein« coalesce under the name of »Kunstverein in Hamburg«.

For the first time, a »Permanente Ausstellung« (permanent exhibition) with some weekly changing artworks takes place in the premises of the »Patriotische Gesellschaft« (patriotic society), accessible primarily for association members.

Newly established statutes of the association determine that from now on everyone who pays an annual fee can become a member (before, new members could only join the association by getting a two-thirds majority in an election by all members). Since the establishment of this new procedure, the number of new memberships is growing steadily. Professor for classical philology at the »Akademisches Gymnasium« (academic high school) Christian Petersen is designated as first spokesman.


1850

The 11. Kunstausstellung (11th art exhibition) includes 819 art works and takes place in the premises of the »Patriotischen Gesellschaft« (patriotic society). It registers almost 10.000 visitors.

On the 13th of March, the public »Gemälde-Gallerie« (paintings gallery) opens in the Börsenarkaden at Adolphsplatz, after it was demanded by the Kunstverein from the city council for the grown art collection. Therefore, the city of Hamburg provides the premises for the new gallery and the Kunstverein provides the collection of art works. Two members of the inner council and two representatives of the Kunstverein form the committee.


1851

The »Permanente Ausstellung« (permanent exhibition) is opened to the public. Works by Artists from Hamburg as well as works by national artists are exhibited.


1852

More premises in the Börsenarkaden are provided by the city. The great hall hosts the »Gemälde-Gallerie« (paintings gallery) and a smaller hall is made available for the »Permanente Ausstellung« (permanent exhibition).


1856

Georg Ernst Harzen enacts in his testament that his assets as well as his art collection may be donated to the city of Hamburg, if the city is able to build an art museum. The premises in the Börsenarkaden are not sufficient enough anymore for the growing »Gemälde-Gallerie« (paintings gallery) as well as the »Permanente Ausstellung« (permanent exhibition).


1858

Due to the efforts of the Kunstverein, a »Comité für den Bau eines öffentlichen Museums in Hamburg« (committee for the construction of a public museum in Hamburg) is formed and raises a significant amount of donations, putting enough pressure on the city council to grant a construction cost aid.


1869

On the 30th of August, the »Hamburger Kunsthalle« (art gallery of Hamburg) is ceremoniously inaugurated. The collection counts 412 paintings (with, amongst others, Philipp Otto Runge’s Die Hülsenbeckschen Kinder, 1805-1806) and numerous sculpture works. Harzen’s estate of 30.000 drawings and graphic prints constitutes the base of the gallery of prints.

The Kunstverein moves into the Kunsthalle.


1870

The 21. Kunstausstellung (21st art exhibition) is the first exhibition to take place at the Kunsthalle.


1871

The painter Hermann Steinfurth becomes chairman of the association.

1873

1878

Edmund Johann Krüß, a manufacturer of optic devices becomes chairman.


1880

A remembrance exhibition for Hermann Steinfurth, is carried out by by the Kunstverein and Kunsthalle.


1882

C. H. Schöffer becomes chairman of the association.

1884

Eduard Unger becomes the first executive director, while the merchant and politician Arnold Otto Meyer becomes chairman of the Kunstverein.

Due to construction works in the premises of the Kunsthalle, the »Permanente Ausstellung« (permanent exhibition) is relocated into the newly constructed premises in the »Börsenarkaden«.

The Kunstverein promotes the election of Alfred Lichtwark as executive director of the Kunsthalle. Until his death in 1914, the Kunstverein purchases art works for the Kunsthalle.


1887

Photographs are displayed in an exhibition of the Kunstverein for the first time.


1888

The Kunstverein counts 2.105 members.


1889

Syndikus Dr. Merck becomes chairman of the Kunstverein.


1892

Dr. Werner von Melle, later on mayor of Hamburg, becomes chairman of the Kunstverein.


1894

The Kunstverein renews the format of the »Großen Kunst-Ausstellung« (great art exhibition). Until 1897, a yearly exhibition of over 300 local, national as well as international artists takes place in the upper floor of the Kunsthalle.


1896

Exhibition: Adolph Menzel, in cooperation with the Kunsthalle.

The collection of graphic prints, owned by the Kunstverein, is handed over to the Kunsthalle.


1897

Hans Zimmermann, a construction director, becomes chairman of the Kunstverein.

On the 15th of November, the Kunstverein moves into its own, newly constructed premises at Neuer Wall 14. The building has three fanlight halls for paintings and sculptures as well as four rooms for arts and crafts.


1906

The number of local, national and international artists continues to grow. For this year alone, there are registered already over a dozen of art exhibitions of by now less familiar artists.


1907

Inter alia, a collection of ethnographic and aesthetic objects from Tibet and Mandshuria is displayed.


1908

Anniversary exhibition of the Kunstverein takes place.

1911

Internationale Photographische Ausstellung für Bildnis und Figurenbild (International photographic exhibition for portraits and figure paintings).


1912

Exhibition of the artist group »Les Indépendants«, Paris.

The Kunstverein temporarily moves into rooms of the east wing of the old Johanneum at Speersort, where works by, inter alia, Arnold Böcklin, Lovis Corinth, Anselm Feuerbach, Wilhelm Leibl, Max Liebermann, Adolph Menzel, Christian Rohlfs, Max Slevogt, Carl Spitzweg, Ludwig Thoma, Wilhelm Trübner, Fritz von Uhde and Emil Waldmüller are exhibited.

Exhibition with works by Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, Walter Georgi, Franz Nölken and Ascan Lutteroth.


1916

The Kunstverein moves back into the Kunsthalle. Due to shortage of space, the department for arts and crafts is closed down.


1919

A new exhibition titled Französische Malerei bis 1914 (French painting until 1914) shows works by, inter alia, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Gustave Courbet, André Derain, Raoul Dufy, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Juan Gris, Marie Laurencin, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, Henri Rousseau, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Alfred Sisley, Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Vlaminck and Édouard Vuillard.

The »Hamburgische Sezession« (Hamburg secession) is founded. The Kunstverein provides its premises for their yearly exhibitions and presentations.

1921

The Kunstverein moves from the old part of the Kunsthalle into galleries at base level in the new part of the building.


1922

Exhibition of the »Deutscher Künstlerbund« (union of German artists).


1925

Robert Johannes Meyer becomes president of the Kunstverein.

The Kunstverein counts ca. 1.000 members.


1927

The exhibition Europäische Kunst der Gegenwart (European contemporary art) is organized for the occasion of the mistakenly presumed 100th Birthday and shows the entire European modern era. It manages to obtain over 40.000 visitors and thanks to the revenues of this exhibition, the Kunstverein is able to purchase a villa at the Neue Rabenstraße 25 as its first own residence.

1930

Opening of the new building of the Kunstverein, which was reconstructed and extended by Karl Schneider.

The executive director Theodor Brodersen transfers to the »Verein Berliner Künstler« (association of Berlin artists) in Berlin.

1931

On May the 1st, Hildebrand Gurlitt becomes executive director of the art association.

1932

First attacks by the Nazi regime against the chairman of the Kunstverein take place.

The association counts 631 members.

Exhibitions: Internationale Foto-Ausstellung(international photographs exhibition)/ Lyonel Feininger / Neuere dänische Malerei (new Danish painting) / James Ensor.


1933

The 13. Ausstellung der Hamburgischen Sezession (13th exhibition of the Hamburg secession) is opened on the 12th of May but closed down on the 30th of May by Hamburg’s police commissioner. President of the district court Robert Johannes Meyer resigns as chairman of the Kunstverein on the 1st of June, since he is supposed to begin the »Gleichschaltung« (enforced conformity) of the Kunstverein. On the 14th of July, Hildebrand Gurlitt is also forced step down from his office. NSDAP-member Friedrich Muthmann is assigned as executive director. Jewish members have to leave the association.

1934

The exhibition Malerei und Plastik in Deutschland 1936 (paintings and sculpture works in Germany 1936) opens on July the 21st on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Berlin and is closed down only ten days later by vice president of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste (Reich’s authority of the fine arts) Adolf Ziegler.

1936

The Kunstverein counts only 337 members.


1937

The building at Neue Rabenstraße is being foreclosed and the Kunstverein moves back into the Kunsthalle. The house is led to the NS-Frauenschaft (Nazi womens organisation) by the city.


1943

Destruction oft he Kunstverein’s building by a bomb attack of the allied forces in the summer of 1943.


1946

With an exhibition in the art dealers shop »Bock & Sohn« in the Kollonaden and the base level of the Kunsthalle by Hamburg artists, the art association comes back to life. Dr. Carl Georg Heise, who is simultaneously chairman of the Kunsthalle, becomes artistic director and Dr. Walter Klaas becomes first chairman. From now on, the art association serves as an independently funded exhibition unit of the Kunsthalle.


1947

The Kunstverein dedicates itself to a series of exhibitions for the purpose of rehabilitation of modern art.

Dr. Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen becomes executive director of the Kunstverein. The house at Ferdinandstor is abandoned, since it has to give way to the extension building of the Kunsthalle. The mural painting of Palermo from 1973 is uncovered. The Kunstverein guests in the »kleine Deichtorhalle«.
