The formal principle of layering paint and repainting are characteristic for the paintings by Gustav Kluge (*1947 in Wittenberg / Elbe, GER, lives in Hamburg / Karlsruhe, GER). These principles can also be found in the technique of the double exposure, he is using for the production of his photographs taken with a pinhole camera. The light lines of his photos are showing structures and silhouettes being reminiscent of his impasto paintings. For Kluge painting is a comprehensive process, a process of observing society and the existence of the individual. Also psychological issues are playing a relevant role, such as the importance of the mythical and the collective unconscious.
