Prem Sahib

David’s Head, 2017

900* Euro

Prem Sahib (b.1982, London, UK, lives and works in London) predominantly works with sculpture and draws on the aesthetics of public and personal spaces. Industrial materials and simplified geometrical shapes are reminiscent of Minimal Art. However, in contrast to Minimalism, Sahib is not only focused on objectivity, and logic; his sculptures are also charged with personal experiences, symbolism, emotions, and subjectivity. Their clearly contoured, schematic, andexterior forms stand in contrast to the very personal content. His works frequently reference the human body and human touch as well as their absence and they move between the fragile intermediate area between the public and private sphere.

The photograph of David's Head shows a bust of Michelangelo's David in the demolished Chariots Roman Spa in London's Shoreditch. The sauna club had to close in 2016 after almost 20 years to make room for a luxury hotel. The Chariots was a resort and a meeting place for the local gay scene, a place for exchange and communication and retreat, but also a place for cruising and sexual desire - a complicated-chaotic intermediate world in which the private and the public collided with each other beyond moral and normative categories. The small-format photograph creates an intimate setting for the memory of a place whose fate can be representative of the upheavals in the living worlds of our cities.
