Mette Sterres (*1983 in Delft, lives and works in Rotterdam) artistic practice refers to the grotesque, the disorderly, the uncanny and the paradoxical. With her performances and sculptural costumes she blurs the boundary between the body and the object, between gender and identity.

This year she staged a DIY opera at the Kunstverein in Hamburg in order to pose questions to our past, present and future society with theatrical and artistic means. In particular, a contemporary feminist view came to the fore here. For A Circuit of Overthinking - A Circus of IT Girls, Sterre invited female identifying artists and performers to explore the notion of the IT girl. The performance explored the position of women in society, the male and female gaze, and changing moral value systems in a changing landscape shaped by digital culture, politics of fear, and the role of the physical body and the self. The concept of the IT girl was interwoven with ideas of consumption, identity, privilege, glamour, individualization, status, decline, aging, and the moment of construction of femininity and sexuality.

For the final image of the performance, Sterre oriented herself on the conventions of classical Greek tragedy and created masks for the performers, who gave them a rigid, angry appearance. The exclusive edition for the members of the Kunstverein hmpf, pfegh, puuffgh this is NOT Maladaptive anger it's RAGE aaaargghhh (Say, for example, the operator has to explain and re-explain a procedure over and over, but the caller can never seem to get it right) is based on this exodus of her performance. Sterre creates large-format portraits of the buyers based on photographs, thus making highly personal drawings that can also function as masks.
