Nicola Gördes & Stella Rossié

TÜV Nord, 2018

250* Euro

Stella Rossié and Nicola Gördes (*1986 in Lennestadt, *1989 in Bochum; live and work in Hamburg, Dortmund and Münster) investigate socio and pop cultural phenomena or spaces for action in their works. In doing so, they often transfer the specific set of rules, traditions and characters of such gatherings into absurdity through precise humorous shifts. The two artists have been working together since 2013 and have since made six films together. These films trace snapshots of different social milieus without following a narrative structure. Their portrayals bear witness to a distinct power of observation, which at the same time takes a critical look at social entities. At the Kunstverein in Hamburg, the two opened the performance program Staging Realititeswith their new work THUG LIFE, for which they transformed the lower exhibition space into an abandoned clubhouse in which bizarre ghosts and conspiracy theories appeared.

The edition TÜV Nord was created during this year's travel grant of Neue Kunst in Hamburg e.V., through which the two artists visited Detroit, among other places. The former heart of the US-American automobile industry today is characterized by high unemployment and crime, vacancy and major social problems. During their stay, Rossié and Gördes were particularly struck by the many battered and patched-up cars that characterize the cityscape of the former "Motor City". Based on this experience, the two developed large-format car stickers based on stickers used to tune and individualize cars. The two artists turn the idea of refinement upside down. Instead of sleek flame patterns, the motifs show dents, scratches or extreme rust attack and could thus function as a special form of anti-theft protection.
