For her works, Katja Novitskova (*1984 Tallinn, lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin) adapts images from online sources that refer to realities lying beyond the capacities of the human eye, but which have long entered our lives as visual artifacts. Today, almost all aspects of human and increasingly nonhuman lives are registered or modeled by software on an environmental scale. Data-collection and processing have long transcended the limits of our planet and have become the tools to navigate beyond and throughout Earth.
With her–exclusively produced for the Kunstverein– editions Mapping potential (Titan, protein marker) and Mapping potential (camels at night), Novitskova explores on that phenomenon in a visual poetic manner. By assembling and superimposing the largest moon of Saturn and night vision imagery of a camel herd with microscope photographs and CGI stemming from the sphere of molecular biology, Novitskova illustrates the radically new articulation of the role of the image, and how constant mediation gains an ecological dimension.
